Books’ “The Lemon of Pink” is a good example of what musical collaging techniques can achieve in terms of creating an atmosphere and a specific mood in listeners. A lot of it actually sounds like a 21st century adaptation of Mike Oldfield’s supreme “Tubular Bells” album, shifting and flowing between different sounds and emotional states seamlessly.
The combination of radio samples, twisted vocals, banjos, violins and other electro-acoustic experimentation works quite well, and it’s refreshing to see a release which is built up around the organic structure of an album as an entirety, rather than just as a loose collection of individual tracks. Of course, it must be noted that there are no other competitors in the genre The Books occupy, as it is one which solely belongs to them. Fresh and unique; the indie-electronicized music of The Books should be listened to in one sitting.
