LOS ANGELES — In the song “Leave Me Alone,” imperiled pop star Britney Spears sang, “Leave me alone/ Let me live my life in peace.” Now, she might want to sing those words to the medical workers on duty during her most recent hospital stay.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the UCLA Medical Center has launched an investigation into some 25 employees who peeked at the singer’s confidential medical records during her late January/ early February stay in the psychiatric ward. This week, the hospital began the process of firing 13 employees, has suspended at least six more, and is considering discipline against six other physicians who looked at her computerized records.

“It’s not only surprising,” human resources director Jeri Simpson told the paper, adding that similar firings also followed Spears’ 2005 stay, when she gave birth to her first child, Sean Preston. “It’s very frustrating, and it’s very disappointing.

“I feel like we do everything that we possibly can to ensure the privacy of our patients, and I know we feel horrible that it happened again,” Simpson added, offering an apology to Spears. “I don’t know what it is about this particular person.”

UCLA confirmed that, in an attempt to keep this breach of ethics from occurring, officials had sent out a memo on the morning Spears was hospitalized. The memo reminded employees that they were only allowed to view their own patients’ records and that doing otherwise violated a federal patient-privacy law called the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

“Each member of our workforce, which includes our physicians, faculty, employees, volunteers and students, is responsible to ensure that medical information is only accessed as required for treatment, for facilitating payment of a claim, or for supporting our healthcare operations,” the memo read. “Please remember that any unauthorized access by a workforce member will be subject to disciplinary action, which could include termination.”

During routine monitoring of inappropriate record-viewing, UCLA officials uncovered violations by both medical and nonmedical personnel involving Spears’ records, following an electronic trail left by the employees.

In defense of the alleged tabloid-minded peepers, unions such as the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 at UCLA are representing some of the health workers who’ve been told they’re being fired. “We believe that the university has a responsibility to their patients,” said Nicole Moore, the union’s lead organizer. “But also their employees, to administer fair and consistent discipline to everybody, regardless of their position, whether it’s a doctor who violated it or a certified nursing assistant.”

In other parts of the country, celebs such as George Clooney have run into similar problems. The “Ocean’s Eleven” star was hospitalized in October at New Jersey’s Palisades Medical Center after a motorcycle accident, only to have more than two dozen employees of the hospital later suspended for looking at his confidential records.

Simpson added that UCLA treats non-Britney celebrities “all the time,” insisting “you never hear about this.”

Paramore Exclusive: Band Addresses Breakup Rumors, ‘Internal Issues’  No, they’re not breaking up, and Hayley Williams is not pregnant, the singer emphasizes in the first interview since rumors began.

AUSTIN, Texas — Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams wants to make this as clear as humanly possible: Despite what you might have heard, her band is not breaking up. Really, honestly, truthfully.

“No, Paramore is not breaking up. Not at all,” she laughed, before turning to her bandmates to make sure. “We’re not, are we?”

Everyone seated around her — guitarist Josh Farro, bassist Jeremy Davis and drummer Zac Farro — agreed. And they appeared happy to. So, it seems that Paramore really aren’t breaking up.

And though it seems like we’re being repetitive here, that’s exactly the reason Paramore decided to talk to MTV News in Austin — where they’ll headline a Hot Topic South by Southwest showcase late Friday night (March 14) — because they wanted to clear up any misconceptions about why they decided to cancel a week of European tour dates last month. That move, coupled with Williams’ mention of “internal issues” in a subsequent blog post, caused this whole “breakup” talk to begin in the first place. This is their first interview since the incident, and they’re hoping it’ll be the last they have to give about the subject.

“We tried to be as honest as we could with it, without giving our life stories, and it definitely did come back to bite us, but in the end, it was the best thing for us to do, to communicate with our fans that we needed time. We needed time to come home and catch our breath,” Williams said. “It’s been a long year, ever since Riot! came out, it’s just been nonstop. And that’s not to say that it hasn’t also been the time of our lives, but there comes a time when you really have to do something for yourself for once. And that’s what we had to do. We didn’t like canceling shows, but that’s what it took; to go home and kind of start over again.”

Of course, Williams never intended to start all the rumors with her blog post. She claims that when she wrote it, she was just feeling really down about having to cancel a string of dates. But the chain reaction it caused was just another example of how bright the spotlight shines on Paramore these days.

“When we posted the first blog, we were in one mind-set, and then it took us a couple of days being home to have a different view on the whole thing. We wrote that blog in the airport, getting ready to come home, and we were all down. And I think, just like anyone’s personal blog, you can sense the emotion in [our] words,” she said. “The first blog we posted was definitely a downer. We tried to thread some hope in there, but we were bummed out, we were letting a lot of people down, and we didn’t like that. We never like letting people down, which might be the reason we got in this situation in the first place.

“And then two days went by, and we started to feel better about the situation, and that’s why we posted another blog saying, ‘Things are cool. We just have some things to work through, but it’s good, it’s important and it’s healthy,’ ” she continued. “We’ve been posting blogs to our LiveJournal and talking to our fans that way for years now, and it’s always been something that’s been really fun for us. But now it’s crazy, because I’ll post something, and it’s all over the place. It’s really funny how things have escalated, and how people make a huge deal out of the tiniest things. We were coming home, we canceled a week of shows, and then the next thing you know, I’m pregnant.”

Ah, yes, about that pregnancy rumor. It was just one of several dozen that hit the Net in the days following Williams’ blog post (others included the dissolution of an intraband relationship and Williams hooking up with various members of pretty much any band you can think of). Given the way news spreads today, each rumor was taken as gospel. Of course, Williams has got something to say about all that too.

“Well, as you can see, I am still a twig. Nothing in there but last night’s dinner,” she laughed, patting her stomach. “It’s really funny how that pregnancy thing came up. It’s happened before too. Someone said I was pregnant with some dude in some band’s baby, like two years ago. It’s hilarious, really. … We try not to get into our personal relationships with the press or even with bands so much, because there’s a fine line between being open and having your personal life and situations threatened. And we never want to put ourselves in that position where we have to really defend something we [shouldn't] have to defend.

“It sucks people took it that far, but it’s … everything’s cool, we’re all right,” she added. “We’re off to a better start than we were about a year ago. It feels good, and when we go back out on the road, I just think we’ll be more prepared for whatever comes up.”

While no one in the band will discuss just what was fixed when they returned home to Tennessee, they all seem to agree that things are much better already. And as Paramore get ready to hit the road with Jimmy Eat World in April, they say that for the first time in a while, they’re recharged and ready to hit the ground running.

“I think what we really needed was just time to rest and just be normal people,” Farro said. “We got home and were thinking, ‘What are we going to do to make things better?’ And we sort of realized that we just needed time to ourselves, because the road catches up to you. Touring really got to us. We still love it with all our hearts, but it takes a toll mentally and physically. But we just needed time with our friends and family, and just [to relax] and basically refuel. Now, I can’t tell you how excited we are about things.”

A “Death metal evening” in a little place in West Norway, called Sandnes. The evening kicked of at 10 o�clock. Incantation were the first to play. The Americans play for about half an hour without getting a response from 60% of the audience, while the diehards stood in front of the stage, banging their heads a little bit closer to a life in the wheelchair. To be honest, Incantation aren�t that great, their drummer is hammering on his drums without changing the rhythm for six minutes, the guitar riffs are boring and when they should have had something like a solo or a melodic part in their songs, they are just using the distortion (a mistake many bands do) and their vocalist voice sounds like the voice of a smoker who lost 90% of his lung capacity.

Next to play were Norwegians Ragnor�k. They bore most of the audience to death, with their 7-8 minutes lasting songs. Some of the songs sound promising and one of the guitarists is able to play his instrument, but the drummer is horrible and messes up for the rest of the band while the vocalist is shrieking like an 8 year old girl.

Krisiun, the evening�s first highlight, are asking the audience before they play their first song:” Are you ready for some brutal Death metal?”- “YES”, and Krisiun showed in an impressive way why they are regarded as one of the best Death metal bands right now, brutal riffs, thrilling guitar solos, a vocalist who is able to perform all sorts of death vocals, and a drummer who is playing the most thrilling rhythms I�ve ever heard. Highlight of the show was the drummers drum solo which was really incredible and which is impossible to describe with words.

The last band of the evening were Behemoth, who started at 1 o�clock in the night, most of the audience properly pissed, hardly realising that a concert was on, some of the outside to puke, and a bunch of 50 persons who still were alive celebrating the music which was performed on stage. “Behemoth” did nothing less than the audience who still was watching expected them to do: they played brutal riffs, with extremely fast drums that at some points reminded me of industrial metal, and a vocalist who growled deeper than a wolf is ever going to do.

2 o�clock in the morning, a bunch of drunk people standing in front of Tribute in Sandnes, smoking a cigarette, most of the them with smiles on their faces. The last two bands gave the audience that what they had come for: brutal death metal at its very best. Even if the evening started with two bands that people who stand outside of the death metal scene probably never will like, the last two bands were worth the ticket price.

Half-way through the show and I’m sweating beer and adrenaline by the bucketload. In a last-ditch effort at salvaging what remains of the objective eyes and ears of the observing music journalist, I try to clap only half-heartedly along with the lush electronics and blasting rhythms served up by Ralph Myerz & The Jack Herren Band, and jump up and down on the swaying floor with a restrained enthusiasm. But who am I kidding? Ralph Myerz are fantastic, their live alter ego being less lounge and far more energetic than anything they’ve been able to cut to wax thus far. And anyone who goes to their show is guaranteed not to escape the primal urge to get funky.

From middle-aged to underage, Folken is packed like the sardine cans Stavanger was once so renowned for. After an ironic laugh with the by-now obligatory live introduction of “Gloria, Gloria”, the band catapult themselves onto the stage and throw an epileptic attack of funky beats, a dazzling frenzy of coloured lights and various electronic samplings, blips and beeps. Everyone is cheering. Everyone is dancing without restraint, in a thoroughly un-Norwegian, beer-induced fashion. Someone even manages to spill their beer on my head from the second floor. I can’t seem to rouse myself enough to care though, being thoroughly mesmerised by the Bergen boys who play it loud and fast, like they were ten in number and roaring high on every synthetic drug known to mankind. The double percussion/drum batteries bongo away. “Casino” comes on and everyone goes wild.

And then it’s all over, dead in a hearbeat and the hypnotised zombie crowds are left to stumble away, suddenly lonely and disconnected into the night. The electronic wizardry is packed up into metal cases and shipped off along with the rest of the band to the next city, to new and adoring audiences.

Despite the fact that Mortiis had to cancel his “Grudge Unlimited” show last-minute because of an unexpected throat infection, fellow Norwegians Susperia were able to put on a good extended support set for the 120 or so metalheads and other rocking scum who had made their way to Folken for the night. I was more than a little disappointed to miss out on Mortiis’ live rendition of his latest record, especially after doing a very interesting interview with the man himself some few hours earlier. With a bag full of thrashing riffs and blast beats, however, Susperia were at times an impressive replacement outfit, putting on a better performance than I had come to expect from my somewhat limited familiarity with their studio output. While there were moments that left me yawning, songs like “Chemistry” and “Home Sweet Hell” were great examples of thrashy, melodic metal put on by a band conscious of their live image, and no doubt lifted by the enthusiastic if small crowd of dedicated fans in the audience.

I always found shouting and hailing a band to be a ridiculous endeavour, but in the case of Susperia the atmosphere felt good, positive, even if the air fans pointed at the band to create a “hair-in-wind” effect were cheesy as hell. The band made sure to move around a lot, switching positions, making eye-contact and making sure to engage the crowds in the pit as well as the under-age kids in the upstairs gallery, and put on a generally enjoyable show even for the sizable non-metal crowd. It’s always fun to spot middle-aged businessmen tapping their feet and bobbing their heads to this sort of relatively extreme music.

And yes, some of the songs were a little drawn out and the vocals were for the most part very 1980s and not nearly brutal enough to suit the thrashy mood of Susperia’s music, but the group were still obviously skilled musicians as well as talented entertainers - an invaluable combination in a genre littered with bands endowed with only either of the two. The self-ironic closing cover of a-ha’s “The Sun Always Shines on TV” was obviously a gem, and I know it put a smile on more than one black-clad metaller’s face for the night.
