Dan Swano, renaissance man and brain behind such bands as Edge of Sanity and Pan-Thy-Monium, reveals his more sensitive side in his Nightingale project. “I,” the “band’s” third offering, provides the listener with a good 11, mostly well written, rock songs with a clear seventies influence.
The album kicks off with “Scarred for Life”, in my opinion the best track on the album. It features some above-average vocal work by Dan Swano, and has an absolutely incredible solo. The next two songs, “Still in the Dark” and “The Game” are also great reminders of the songwriting genius of good old Dan. From this point and onwards, however, the album goes slightly downhill, “Alonely” being one of only two tracks that retain any lasting interest. I mean, most of the songs maintain a decent standard, but they really don’t have that little extra “something” that takes the song to another level. Oh, well.
All in all, though, “I” is a strong album with its fair share of gems. A good seven out of ten points, I’d say.
